EXPLORE BAHIA: THE HEART OF AFRO-BRAZILIAN CULTURE

AUGUST 13 - 19, 2017

Join us for a journey of Drum, Dance, Ancestral Connection and
Creative Expression

Black Arts Retreat BRAZIL begins in the jewel-toned city of Salvador, where African identity and 17th-century colonial architecture fuse to create a contemporary epicenter of Arts and Culture. Our Cultural Immersion continues in Cachoeira at the Boa Morte Festival, one of the most important historical and cultural festivities in Brazil. The Boa Morte sisterhood was founded 200 years ago by emancipated black women devoted to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Traditional Candomblé rites. We will experience the festival and sit down with the sisters.

Our sojourn is rounded out with Capoeira, Cooking Lessons, Artist Hangouts and a visit to the Steve Biko Institute. In addition to the transformative creative experience of Black Arts Retreat, our adventures in Brazil will leave you fortified, connected and invigorated with the power of our collective brilliance! The cost of this trip is $1,500 - if paid in full by June 1 or $1,650 thereafter - which includes all activities, accommodations, meals, local transportation and on-site translation. Participation in Black Arts Retreat Brazil is open to all aged 16+! Please note that spaces are limited.

A Note from Black Arts Retreat Founder Kelly Thomas

"I didn't start Black Arts Retreat. It started Me. This experience is made out of a legacy and lineage of black people to free ourselves. Creating safe space for ourselves and each other. Choosing to create intentional communities, since the maroons and before that.
Creating respite - to take time away from the every day to make a way to be free. Make a way for yourself and let's breathe together."
